Best places to eat between Denver and Kansas City, MO

I am taking a road trip and wanted to know the best places to stop.

Best places to eat between Denver and Kansas City, MO

Depends on time of day and what you%26#39;re looking for, but...Cozy Inn in Salina, KS (great hamburgers), Brookville Hotel in Abilene, KS (best fried chicken dinners ever!), Guy and Mae%26#39;s, Williamsburg, KS (excellent barbeque). Here%26#39;s a website with some ideas: www.kansastravel.org/kansasrestaurants.htm

Thank you, Zoey1996!

Another standout restaurant is the Bunker Hill Cafe in Bunker Hill (Open just Thursday - Saturday evenings) with great steak (beef, elk %26amp; buffalo) and homemade bread.

There are a bunch of good places a couple of miles off the freeway in Lawrence.

And Junchtion City is the place to stop for great but not fancy Korean food - Pusan Restaurant %26amp; Korean Dinner.

Oh - Guy and Mae%26#39;s (which I don%26#39;t happen to care for) is off I-35:-)

Hays is an almost halfway point between KC and Denver. Downtown there is a local brewery that has a different sort of restaurant.

I love the fried bread that they bring you before your meal.

Hi,

There are several good restaurants in Lawrence, Kansas. Try the restaurant in the historic Eldridge hotel or Teller%26#39;s restaurant housed in a former bank (circa 1889).

Buffalo Bob%26#39;s Smokehouse has been serving great barbecue for years. Don%26#39;s Steakhouse, another Lawrence tradition, serves great steaks.

For a gourmet hamburger cooked the way you want it, try The Burger Stand at Dempseys at 623 Vermont.

Yello Sub, another Lawrence tradition, serves great sandwiches (my favorite is the crab cali...crab, salsa, avocado, alfalfa sprouts, tomato and more). The restaurants have branches in Kansas City, but called Planet Sub.

If you have time, take a walk around downtown Lawrence and visit the campus of the University of Kansas (especially the Art Museum and the Museum of Natural History).

In Kansas City, barbecue is king. There are lots of good restaurants...Fiorella%26#39;s Jack Stack, Gate%26#39;s Barbeque, Arthur Bryant%26#39;s and my favorite KC Masterpiece.

Have a great trip!

I second the Cozy Inn in Salina, KS...it%26#39;s a great experience and great mini burgers (you buy them in 1/2 or full dozens!) My family and I always make the stop when we are driving the other way (Kansas to Colorado). Check out this website to see if it%26#39;s the kind of thing you%26#39;re looking for b/c it%26#39;s def not a nice sit down restaurant! ;-)

Don%26#39;t stop in Russel, KS.

Several years ago we stopped at a truck stop called The Mitten near the KS/CO border. It was the best food and best service. I ordered a Belgium waffle with strawberries and whipped cream. She brought me a bowl of fresh cut strawberries and the entire can of whipped cream :)

You can search for the flavor you are looking for on this website, brought to you by the Kansas Tourism office... www.travelks.com/s/index.cfm?advsearch=eat

The Kansas I-70 Ready-Made Adventure may also give you some ideas for places to eat, and if you have time, some attractions to check out along the way... https://www.travelks.com/s/index.cfm?aid=118

Enjoy your trip!

aquariangal, I posted this on the Colo. forums too but thought others might see it here. We just made the trip on I70 from Salina to Denver and stopped in Oakley at the Colonial Steakhouse. It was clean and reasonably priced and they have a salad bar and hot bar option. DH had been craving fried chicken and tried some at a Cracker Barrel a couple of days before and didn%26#39;t think it was great. (good, but too much breading for his taste...imagine! Is there such a thing as too much breading? lol) Well, the Colonial Steakhouse happened to have some on their buffet that day and DH said it was the best fried chicken he%26#39;d had in a LONG time. The assortment of homemade pies looked good, too, but we were too stuffed to try any.

If you%26#39;re willing to veer off I-70 a little, you might try ....

* Swedish food in Lindsborg (about 20 miles south of Salina): The Swedish Crown is best known for authentic Swedish specialties, while the Courtyard Bakery has great pastries (Swedish and non-Swedish). If you%26#39;re early, the Swedish Country Inn has a Swedish breakfast buffet that is fantastic. This is a neat little town, worth the short drive off I-70, with some very unique art, culture and food.

OR

* The Hays House 1857, in Council Grove (about 30 miles South from the Manhattan exit on K-177, the Prairie Parkway): Steak and history at the oldest restaurant west of the Mississippi (?) in Council Grove, which was a major stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The drive through the Flint Hills is much better on the %26#39;blue highways%26#39; that bend with the land a little instead of cutting through it, and a good steak would be a bonus.

If staying close to I-70 precludes those two, then I would second the Brookville Hotel for old-time fried chicken and all the fixin%26#39;s ... it%26#39;s hard to beat, but it might be hard to drive away without a nap or at least a walk after eating. Steaks at Puffy%26#39;s Steak and Ice House in Maple Hill is worth the stop, and there are antiques to survey in the area.

In Lawrence, go to Free State Brewery -- even if you don%26#39;t like beer (does anybody not like beer?). Their fresh, house-made pastas and breads are fantastic, with lots of local produce (mushroom season is coming). Other good Mass Street choices are Ingredient for fresh soup-salad-sandwich; La Parillia for Latin American dishes that are cheap and remarkably tasty; or Local Burger, if you%26#39;re All American, for - guess what - gourmet burgers made with the best and freshest locally raised meats ... off the charts better than most any burger you%26#39;ve had.

Have a good road trip!

(sorry I%26#39;m no help at all west of Salina)
