Looking for some info please - I think I made a momumental blunder on a recent trip here and can%26#39;t believe it!
We visited the Tallgrass Praire Preserve after seeing photos of the bison in a leaflet. I%26#39;m not sure which entrance we came in but I do know we took the road from Foraker and followed the signs for the Preserve Headquarters.
We passed by a sign which mentioned nature trails and then came to a building on the left (think it may have been a bunkhouse, it was closed but had restrooms). We parked next to this and there was another building which looked like a visitor centre but it was locked and no-one around. It looked like there were some barns behinmd and there were 2 horses and a donkey in a paddock to the left. I was really disappointed as the leaflet had said open 10 till 4 and this was around noon. We figured it was a Sunday in late September and maybe there was no-one around outwith summer season so we drove back out and took the road to Pawhuska. We saw lots of bison on the way but I admit to being really disappointed that there didn%26#39;t seem to be anything else.
Now I discover there is a historic house and tours and lots of other things - my question is where did we go wrong - was there another road or should we have turned off somewhere else? We assumed the bunkhouse type place was the headquarters.
I feel like the proverbial dumb tourist - I%26#39;d like to know where I went worog (as I was the navigator/map reader/human GPS system) before I confess all to my husband who wasn%26#39;t too impressed with my 100 mile or so detour from our route just to see some bison and tallgrass!
Tallgrass Prairie Preserve
It sounds like you were at the wrong spot. You should have been acouple of miles north of Stong City right on Highway 177. On the west side of the highway.
Did it look like this? www.kansastravel.org/tallgrassprairie.htm
Tallgrass Prairie Preserve
I think she is referring to the Tallgrass Prairie Reserve outside of Pawhuska,OK.
You might try posting this on the Oklahoma forum someone there can probably help you but I know nothing about it.
well, that sums it up - we visited the one on Oklahoma when I%26#39;d been reading the guidebook referring to the one in Kansas. I%26#39;m certainly not going to confess to my other half now! Thanks guys (from the dumbest blonde ever- or so it would appear!)
