Chanute - Safari Museum

My wife and I are planning a trip in June in our Odyssey minivan making the following stops: Greendale, WI, Plymouth, MN, Keystone, SD (all Northern stops)returning on a Southern route taking us through Chanute, KS, and Parke County, IN. We have a general idea of the highways and byways to take but would like some input from those who have been there and done that. We aren%26#39;t going to hurry ourselves, would be willing to explore alternate destinations along the way, will be using a GPS %26amp; AAA TripTiks and are open to all suggestions.

We are most interested in clean, comfortable and safe accomodations.

Points of interest are welcome. We%26#39;re not campers/hikers, night clubbers, prefer suburban rather than urban.

Thanks in advance to all who share - this will be our first trip farther than Parke County.

Chanute - Safari Museum

US-75 passing through Chanute is very good. It has a 4 lane divided highway bypassing town. The two lane sections north %26amp; south are straight with wide shoulders and it is easy to maintain a speed a little over the 65 MPH limit. K-39 isn%26#39;t bad, but will probably require driving a little slower.

The region around Chanute has some interesting stops, but no ';big'; attractions. Humboldt has a historical museum with nice exhibits devoted to two professional baseball players that came from the town - George Sweatt and Hall of Famer Walter Johnson. In 1924, Johnson was on the team which won the World Series and Sweatt was on the team that won the Negro League World Series.

Piqua has a neat little museum in the rural water district building devoted to Buster Keaton, who was born in that town when his parents were traveling with Harry Houdini.

Altoona has a wonderful hole-in-the-wall bar and grill called the Prairie Nut Hut. In addition to mountain oysters, they serve some of the best hamburgers anywhere.

Dinosaur Not So National Park in the artist%26#39;s yard outside of Erie has wonderful dinosaurs made from scrap metal. http://www.kansastravel.org/dinosaurpark.htm

Those are all within about 30 miles. While driving through the area, you will see fence posts that are (at least in Kansas) unique to the area. They are made from a circle of heavy wire fence filled with stone gleaned from the surrounding fields.

Thank you , thank you very much! Your posts regarding the highways, the burger place and the fence posts are EXACTLY what we%26#39;re after. Baseball and Buster Keaton don%26#39;t do a lot for us but we may be tempted to give it/them a try.

Really looking forward to the Johnsons%26#39; Safari Museum; I am an avid collecter of thier books and movies.

I like the museum a lot. Osa and Martin%26#39;s story is facinating.

When you know what route you are planning to take, let us know and we may have ideas that would interest you along the route.

Hwy 169 goes by Chanute. 75 hwy is 15 miles to the west.

Absolutely correct. Though the description of 169 was accurate.
