Sushi Restaurants

Any suggestions for a good sushi restaurant in or nearby Lenexa?

Sushi Restaurants

Try Kona Grill on the Country Club Plaza - good sushi and a variety of other dishes as well.

Sushi Restaurants

My favorite sushi place near Lenexa is Izumi Japanese Steak %26amp; Sushi, on 135th Street in Overland Park

Izumi is excellent! You can%26#39;t go wrong with Izumi Japanese Steakhouse / Sushi. It%26#39;s the best in the Kansas City area!

So did you try any place in the KC area, consultant951? How was your experience?

If you go to Kona Grill try the ';Happy Hour';. Here%26#39;s the info ...

The Margarita

The Kona

1/2 Price Appetizer%26#39;s -

It%26#39;s a hopp%26#39;in place throughout the evening. Everything at Kona has always been very good! It%26#39;s the longest Happy Hour I%26#39;ve found in the KC area. Enjoy!

My favorite place is Kabuki at Crown Center Plaza. It will be a little bit of a drive for you but I think you will find it worthwhile. Kona Grill is a place to see and be seen. The music will be loud . Not that there is anything wrong with that. Just don%26#39;t plan on the typical serene sushi bar experience if you go.

Buying a house

Hello out there :)

I am hoping that someone can help me. My husband and I visited K.C. in March. We were out driving and found a beautiful neighborhood across from the Plaza. I have been trying to figure a street name or something to help me look at house listings in that area. Thank you so much for you help.

Are you looking for the Kansas neighborhood closest to the County Club Plaza?

Rainbow Boulevard and 48th Stree.

  • Hotels in Hayes/Goodland Kas

Does anyone have a recent experience with the Comfort Inn/Quality Inn in Hayes or Goodland Ks?

    Hotels in Hayes/Goodland Kas

Make certain it has a roof! No really I believe in some very strong winds in the last two days the Hays one lost its roof. I have stayed at the Holiday Inn in Hays - its ok. Great sports bar to watch big screened tv.

    Hotels in Hayes/Goodland Kas

We stayed at the Fairfield Inn in Hays. Very good stay. Restaurants within walking distance.

There is also a brand new Hampton Inn on the north side of I-70 in Hays, not to be confused with the existing Hampton Inn on the southwest side.

  • Farmers Market in or near Overland Park/Lenexa area

Traveling to Overland Park/Lenexa the weekend of July 20th and was wondering if there is a great farmers market to visit on Saturday morning the 21st.

Also, has anyone stayed at a hotel with rooms with a kitchenette, an outdoor pool, is clean and safe and at a decent rate in the Overland Park/Lenexa area? If so, where and how much? and where did you get your rate?

    Thanks

Farmers Market in or near Overland Park/Lenexa area

The farmer%26#39;s market in Overland park is nice, but not particularly large. A list of the vendors is at http://www.downtownop.org/farmers_market.html

The market features live music from 10AM-noon on Saturday, and the old Overland Park shoping area right around the market may also interest you.

The biggest farmer%26#39;s market in the area is at the City Market in downtown Kansas City, MO, about 20 minutes away.

I haven%26#39;t stayed there, but there is a small, family run motel just down Metcalf from the market that has a good rep and may be what you are looking for - White Haven Motor Lodge. http://www.whitehaven.biz/default.asp

It seems to have been transported in time 50 years. Always looks well kept and there is a nice pool area.

My best experiences at inexpensive Wichita motels has been at the south Days Inn %26amp; Suites Wichita at 4875 South Laura.

    Rental Car suggestions

Looking to rent an economy car at or near the Kansas City airport. In checking major rental car companies websites, I see that the related taxes for renting a car at the airport almost doubles the cost of the rental. Any suggestions??

    Rental Car suggestions

I have been told that you can get a better price by renting a car from neighboring towns of Leavenworth and Platte City. A cab or shuttle ride from the airport to these towns would be a small price to pay over the ridiculous taxes at the Kansas City Airport.

    Rental Car suggestions

Sorry, but you can%26#39;t beat the system.

On weekdays, the rental rates are enough lower at the airport locations, that the taxi fare would eat up the modest savings in fees outside Kansas City. On the weekends, the airport rental rates are discounted so far that they are actually cheaper than Leavenworth or Platte City, even with all the extra taxes added in.

    hotel for group

we need 17 rooms near wichita state university, we play at newman stadium ? how far apart are the 2 and what would be a good hotel for about 55-69 per night ?

    thanks in advance.

    hotel for group

If by Newman stadium you mean Newman University the two are about 10 miles apart. You might try the west Wichita Inn 1-800-272-6609. It is only about a mile and a half from Newman University. It does not have a pool but the price is right,it is only a few years old and has many restaurants nearby. Rooms have frig and microwave.

    hotel for group

I%26#39;m not sure how close the Best Western Airport Inn is to Newman Stadium, but we stay there every summer when we fly in to Wichita to visit relatives. There is a huge open inner indoor room with shuffleboards, putting green, pool tables and indoor swimming pool. It would be great for a group. The rooms are inexpensive, clean and quiet.

    Hwy 36

I am taking a trip WEST from the East Coast and I was wondering if ANYONE had any ideas and thoughts about using HWY 36 as my East / West travel route other than using 70.

I want to take it (HWY 36) from Indianapolis to Denver. I want to ';see'; the heartland of the country...or do I even want to go there at all.

Any help on road conditions, hotels and of course local places to eat.

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Hwy 36

I live in Indy and drive to Kansas frequently to visit family.

Recommended stops...Hannibal, MO. I%26#39;m not so big on the Mark Twain stuff, but cute downtown shops and people are very personable. Wonderful old buildings and great views of the Mississippi at night.

If traveling though Missouri and Kansas at night in the autumn, be very careful of deer; there are not wide right-of-ways along most of US 36. Turkey are also plentiful.

For Kansas photos an off-the-beaten path stuff, I recommend www.kansasphototour.com. Go to ';click on the map'; for a preview of scenery. The ';flatlander'; is a relative, and could provide suggestions to suit your interests.

Marysville, Kansas has a nice brick downtown. Try on real western wear at Valley Vet supply on the east end of town.

This would be my suggestion for scenery...From Marysville, Kansas I would suggest driving down 77 through the Flint Hills. Manhattan, Kansas has great nightlife or you could watch the sun set at Konza Prairie near Manhattan, whichever suits. Great steakhouse in Manhattan - Little Apple Brewery. Beef out there is fresh!

    Hope this helps.

    Hwy 36

US 36 is a very good road through Missouri (lots of 4 lane stretches) and most of Kansas. In Western Kansas, the route becomes less heavily traveled. Around the Norton area, there is a route which cuts South to I-70. I would recommend making the cut. fyi- I-70 through Missouri is a real pain.

I think the Kansas portion of 36 would be quite interesting. I actually (and some will think this is bizarre) like the vast, open stretches of desolate prairie you%26#39;ll find as you head into Western Kansas. Many times you%26#39;ll find you have the road to yourself, and on nice crisp fall day it can be a transforming experience. I would definitely prefer it to I-70. Not for everyone though, it takes a certain type of person to appreciate it. The other poster is right about Manhattan, KS. It is actually quite a great place nestled in the Flint Hills. Idyllic college town with a lot of personality. Close by is the vast Konza Prairie, the largest expanse of remaining virgin tallgrass prairie in the U.S., which is owned by the Nature Conservancy.

Hwy 36 is in real good shape, not a lot of traffic. There are several local museums and sites including the Pawnee Indian Village west of Belleville Ks. There are fuel stops at adequate intervals as well as the geographic center of the US just a few miles from 36. The road is good to the Co. border, where it gets a little rough till you get to the Interstate.

I live about 40 miles north of Hwy 36 and I would recommend Hwy 36 over I-70. More to see! Very little traffic. And great places to stop and poke around as you travel.

Phillipsburg, Kansas - on Hwy 36 - if you need a place to eat, the Third Street Bakery has AWESOME croissants. And there is a Mexican restaurant in St. Francis, KS, which is great. It%26#39;s called Park Place. And the ice cream place in St. Francis has wonderful malts - try the strawberry malt, which has REAL strawberries in it and no ice milk.

By the way - if you are traveling in early August, Phillipsburg has a wonderful rodeo. They pack 15,000 people in over 3 nights of rodeo (population of Phillipsburg is 3,000!) and it is great entertainment! August 3-4-5, 2006, I believe.

Did you do this trip? i%26#39;m thinking of trying Colorado through Kansas on this route, primarily because I%26#39;d like to see Norton, where my great grandmother was born back in the pioneer days. The rest of the comments on the route were favorable.

I’ve often traveled Hwy 36 from about Belleville, KS to the Colorado border. Good road, not a lot of traffic. Of course, travel is slower because it’s 70 mph instead of Interstate 70, which is 75 mph. But if you want to see the country, it’s the only way to do it. Desolate, beautiful country . . . not for everyone but if you like wide open spaces and lots of elbow room and magnificent skies, it’s gorgeous.

Along the way, the geographic center of the US is located just north of Lebanon, KS, and there’s that great rodeo in Phillipsburg in early August - Kansas%26#39; Biggest Rodeo, it’s called – I think they have a website.

If you go farther than your great grandmother’s birthplace of Norton, to Oberlin, there’s a GREAT little place to eat – a former bank converted into a B%26amp;B with good food. It’s the Landmark Inn – 785-475-2340. And in Atwood, farther west of Oberlin, the old Shirley Opera House has been converted into a nice restaurant. Phone is 785-626-3740. But maybe only open on weekends? I’m not sure.

St. Francis also has a good place to eat – an ice cream place on the north side of Hwy 36, with REAL strawberry malts with chunks of strawberry! I forget the name of the place, but it’s the only one and it won’t be hard to find.

My great grandma was born in Atwood, Kansas, west of Norton, and my grandma and grandpa lived, died and were buried there so I know that part of the country and I’m in love with it. Like I said, it’s not for everyone but it can get in your blood, the beautiful skies and the extreme temps. Baxter Black, the cowboy poet said about the far off places of our nation, “not better, not worse, just a little leaner and closer to the bone.” Perfect description of north central Kansas.

I hope you go! Enjoy the trip!

    babalootie,

I%26#39;ve driven about 2/3s of that route at different times. It is an easy drive.

  • Kansas family reunion

I will be planning a family reunion in Kansas next 4th of July weekend. There will be about 30 of us, with varied disposable incomes. We would like to find a place that has some character, where we could all be together. The only other necessity is that it is no more than an hour or so from Kansas City or Wichita airports.

Resorts or B%26amp;Bs might work. Given the time of year, A/C might be good.

    Any Suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

    Kansas family reunion

From most cities, you will find lower airfares to the Kansas City airport. It is a hub for Southwest and Midwest Airlines.

Lawrence is about the right distance from the airport. It is a neat, historic, college community that still has an active downtown and many unique restaurants. There are a number of museums to visit at the University of Kansas.

The Halcyon House B%26amp;B is within walking distance of the downtown and University. It has 9 bedrooms, and you could take over the whole house. http://www.thehalcyonhouse.com/

I stayed there about 7 years ago. It was pretty nice at that time. The Carriage House was particularly sweet.

I don%26#39;t think you will find any places that don%26#39;t have AC.

Thank you very much! We%26#39;ll look into it.

    Staying 2 nights in Wichita

My brother and I will be driving to Wichita from the Denver area next month to suprise our grandma in Wichita. We are needing a nice hotel, we%26#39;ll need a 2 bedroom suite... Where is a nice place to stay? Also we plan on hitting a Godfather Pizza (since they are no longer in Denver)..

    Thanks in Advance!

    Staying 2 nights in Wichita

I would recommend the Hotel at Old Town,Courtyard by Marriott or the Hyatt. They are all in the downtown area and should be able to provide the rooms you need.

Embassy Suites-Overland Park, KS. Did you know...?

I just wanted to share something that I learned about this particular Embassy Suites. This was the very first Embassy Suites ever built. It opened in 1984 and served as a prototype. One thing that I notice about this particular hotel that I don%26#39;t in other Embassy Suites is that the atrium is triangular, whereas the atria (I guess that%26#39;s right) of other Embassy Suites that have them are usually square or rectangular in shape. I think that the atrium is a nice touch to the Embassy Suites hotels, but sometimes carries the noise. One question I have is I was wondering how this Embassy Suites rates compared to others. There is an older (1985) Embassy Suites near me in Hunt Valley, MD that has never been redone since the day it opened, or at least that%26#39;s what I%26#39;ve heard. It used to be nice but I have heard that it is really getting run down and has gotten quite a few bad reviews on here lately. My favorite Embassy Suites hotels that I have stayed at are the one near the Pittsburgh airport in Coraopolis, PA and the one in Cary, NC. If anyone has any thoughts or comments about the Embassy Suites in Overland Park, please feel to share them. Also, any comments regarding the Embassy Suites chain itself are appropriate here, as Overland Park is its birthplace. Thanks.

Embassy Suites-Overland Park, KS. Did you know...?

I have to agree with you 100 percent, .too many kids/no supervision

Embassy Suites-Overland Park, KS. Did you know...?

Haven%26#39;t stayed in the OP ES, but have stayed many times in the one across the state line into KCMO, on 43rd St. (supposedly ';Plaza';, but really between Plaza and Westport). The Plaza location must have opened about the same time, or shortly after, because I remember staying there a very long time ago, I thought even prior to 1984 (???) The pool there is still great, but the overall place is getting a bit raggedy, or may sometimes seem that way due to non-attentive staff. Have stayed at other ES, and one of my favorites was Austin TX, by Town Lake. You could walk over the ';bat bridge'; to downtown on Congress Avenue, and Threadgill%26#39;s is just to the south for that Armadillo Vibe. The pool at Austin is nearly as good, but the atrium is beautiful and the whole place was very well maintained.

Too many unsupervised kids ??? Of course! You combine a big atrium with glass elevators and a pool, with free adult beverages in the evening, and the kids will run wild while the grownups grab a cold one and relax. That%26#39;s the reality, but it ususally isn%26#39;t that noisy, and it%26#39;s a great hotel concept.

We love Embassy. Wonder if you could check the dates on the opening ... it really seems like I stayed on 43rd before %26#39;84 .....

    Their corporate website says ';April 1984 - First Embassy Suites opened in Overland Park, Kansas.';

    Restaurants in and around Goddard

Any restaurant suggestions in Goddard, or within 5-10 miles?

Something unque to the area, not a chain.

    Thanks!

    Restaurants in and around Goddard

Unless something has opened in the last few months you are pretty much out of luck. There is a tavern (Siesta Lounge) that used to serve a marinated grilled steak and Greek style salad that was good but I have not been there in years. You had to reserve it ahead of time and It may not even be in business any longer. There is a locally owned restaurant in Goddard but it is mainly truck stop style and I can%26#39;t even remember the name of it. You had to walk through a gift shop to get in the restaurant dining area.

    Restaurants in and around Goddard

Thanks, Patrick. We gave up and went back into Wichita.

Had three meals in Wichita this weekend Two at places I have visited

before: B%26amp;C BBQ and Nu-Way Cafe. One at a new place (to me): Thai

    Tradition. All meals were good.

I have a hard time trying new places down your way. Too many places that I want to return visit:-)

Gerrard%26#39;s has great food, It%26#39;s nothing fancy but it%26#39;s hot and tasty. I recommend the roast beef sandwich. Also,, try some fried okra. It used to be a truck stop but has converted to a more family style restaurant.

Also,,,if u want the best milk shake ever.. go to Walt%26#39;s on the corner of Goddard Rd. and Hwy 54. It%26#39;s a small shop, but excellent ice cream, the fries are really greasy though.

1 day trip to Wichita, 1st time visit

    Hi Everyone,

We are planning a road trip and one of our stops will be Wichita. We will only be in town for 1 day at most and this will be in the month of May. Can anyone recommend, for a first time visitor on a limited amount of time, what would be the ';must dos';?

We really don%26#39;t care what we do, we just want to experience the best time we can while we%26#39;re in Wichita on our short amount of time and absolutely any input would be appreciated.

We will have a car, if that means anything.

    Thank you all so much!

    Charlene

1 day trip to Wichita, 1st time visit

It would help if we knew what you like to do, but here is a shot.

The Sedgwick County Zoo is one of the best in the country. If you normally do zoos, you should visit this one.

This one will add an hours%26#39; drive each way, but the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson is world class. If either of you are interested in aviation or space, this is a solid ';must do.'; The Cosmosphere%26#39;s collection is phenomenal: more Soviet space items than anyplace outside the former Soviet Union, Liberty Bell 7 (the one recovered from the bottom of the ocean by the Discover Channel), the Apollo 13 Command Capsule, much more. This is the museum that does the restoration for most of the others.

If you make the trip to Hutch, you should also consider the new Salt Mine Museum, and stopping at Yoder - a small Amish/Mennonite community along the way.

There are many other cool things in Wichita including minor league baseball, parks, cool restuarants and many museums; but I don%26#39;t think that any of them are ';must dos.'; Tell us what your interests are, and we can suggest the things most likely to interest you.

    Have a good time.

1 day trip to Wichita, 1st time visit

I would strongly second the previous recommendations. Another suggestion would be the Museum of World Treasures in our Old Town area. It is a collection of everything from dinosaurs to WWII memorabilia. Also at that time of the year, Botanica, the Wichita botanical gardens should be in full flower. If you are at all interested in western art our art museum has a small collection of works by Charles Russell and Fredrick Remington. Russell was certainly capable of painting a picture with words as well as paint.

    Pat

Thank you so much for the suggestions, truly everything sounds wonderful!

I%26#39;ll be 34 and he%26#39;ll be 31 when we do our trip, in terms of what we like to do, I%26#39;m a big antique person, are there any Antique malls or shops that are worth stopping in? We are also both into history, so anything historical would be of interested. I also love gardens and zoos and the space museum, that sounds like fun.

Are there any suggestions on hotels or what part of the city we should consider staying in?

Concerning hotels I would recommend www.hotelatoldtown.com or the Courtyard Marriott ,Wichita Old Town. You can do a search of Marriott%26#39;s web site and find the hotel info. They are both located in the same area and are within a few minutes walk of restaurants, bars, antique stores and even a multi screen movie theatre. The Museum of World Treasures and some interesting shops are just across the street from the Hotel at Old Town(My number one choice) and there are several antique stores on Douglas avenue which is only one block south and then about one-two blocks to your right on Douglas.

There is also a good sized brew pub across the street and a farmers market open on Saturdays in the summer and autumn.

    Pat

Another great place is Cowtown it is near downtown in the Museum District. You will want to check ahead of time to ensure when it opens as it is a seasonal place. It is a western town with many authentic buildings from Wichita%26#39;s original days.

    Does Cowtown appeal to adults?

Driving past, it doesn%26#39;t look very interesting. I could never bring myself to stop.

lighthouse,--- Evidently not,it is closed while trying to get their finances in order.

    Pat

lighthouse - I used to love to visit Old Cowtown; my husband and I got married at the church there in 1989. It has a lot of potential, but many, many museums are struggling with attendance and finances now.

Wideawake, depends on when you%26#39;ll be in town, but Riverfest is in May and can be a lot of fun or a traffic/crowd headache, depending on your point of view!

    Patrick,

I think you are thinking of Wild West World

I stand corrected. It was closed earlier in the summer but is now open Fri.thru Mon. They are having financial problems and also inspection problems A city inspector cited them for failure to have a smoke alarm in the chicken house.

  • Lawrence Motel 6

We are going to a KU football game and the only room we could find is at the Motel 6 in Lawrence. I know some of the Motel 6%26#39;s have become a little dodgy and was wondering if anyone has stayed in this one recently? Many thanks. You do not have to leave the light on.

    Pat

    Lawrence Motel 6

Its been a couple of years since I stayed there. A little dodgy sounds about right, but I would consider it again if choices were limited.

If you are uncomfortable with that hotel, you might look at Bonner Springs to the east on I-70. http://www.bonnersprings.org/tourism2.html

    Lawrence Motel 6

My sister and I stayed there the weekend of Easter. We had no complaints. If you don%26#39;t get a first-floor room and don%26#39;t want to lug your bags up the stairs, there is an elevator. Free coffee only (but isn%26#39;t that true of all Motel 6%26#39;s?), but there is a Burger King within walking distance. I would guess that prices would be higher on a football weekend, but probably less than you%26#39;d find anywhere else. Money%26#39;s always a pretty big consideration for me, so I%26#39;d stay at the Motel 6 in Lawrence again, and when I%26#39;m in Wichita for a weekend, the Motel 6 there is my ';home away from home.'; Good luck to the Jayhawks on gameday!

Thanks to both of you for the info. The jayhawks certainly need all the luck they can get.

patrickh ... You%26#39;re a ';Local Expert'; and you%26#39;re asking about a Motel 6? tsk! tsk! This one%26#39;s not much different from the ones in Wichita ... which means you don%26#39;t really want to stay there if you can help it ... but sometimes you can%26#39;t help it. The doctors and bankers will have the Eldridge and Springhill full to the brim, the Holidome will be packed with family-types, and that leaves ... well, there%26#39;s a Hampton in the motel cluster at 6th %26amp; Iowa, and a H.I. Express way out south on Iowa, then there%26#39;s ... well ... not much. College town motels tend to be high end and bottom end without much middle, and that%26#39;s Lawrence, pretty much. If I was faced with staying at the Motel 6, I think I%26#39;d ';go all the way'; and try to stay in one of the cheezy little old motels, like the College on 6th, so I could pretend I was enjoying the campiness of it all ... and you%26#39;re closer to the campus, downtown, bars, food, etc. If you end up at the Motel 6, I%26#39;d suggest that on the way out there you stop at Johnny%26#39;s, get full of beer and peanuts, stagger to your room, and hope you pass out and never realize where you were sleeping. You might want to stop by a QuikShop and buy a honey bun to complete your continental breakfast, too.

  • Visiting Cottonwood Fall, KS

We visited Cottonwood Falls late on a lovely Sunday morning. The town lives up to its quaint immage. The only problem was that everything was closed. When the restaurant opened we went in for lunch to find that since it is Sunday the only menu item is Sunday Diner. It was either fried chicken or chicken fried steak. Local patrons said it was really good but we just can%26#39;t handle a big meal in the middle of the day. We had to drive to the truckstop in Strong City to get a sandwich. (The Flinthills Restaurant had great hamburgers and grilled chicken sandwiches.)

    Visiting Cottonwood Fall, KS

That Sunday issue is a problem all over the state. I don%26#39;t begrudge the people wanting the time off, but it makes it harder for people wanting to spend a weekend touring Kansas.

The Kansas Guidebook for Explorers, from the Kansas Sampler Foundation, is a good source when you find yourself in rural Kansas looking for a meal: http://kansasguidebook.com/index.html

It is a little too comprehensive to be a good source for advance research. It tends to give equal weight to too many places, making it hard to find the cool spots. But it is a great guide to carry in the car.

They post updates on the website, so you can keep it current for hours or closings.

    Visiting Cottonwood Fall, KS

Kansas is still very church-going, and outside of the bigger cities you are lucky to find much of anything open on a Sunday morning ... other than the church doors. Frankly, the same thing can be said about most small towns after about 7:00 P.M. ... you know the old jokes about ';rolling up the sidewalks'; ... well, it has some basis in fact. The same thing, really, happens in Overland Park about 10 PM.

In a town as small as Cottonwood, even with the recent ';boom-let'; of tourism, there can%26#39;t possibly be enough hungry people wandering the streets to justify a cafe%26#39; being open Sunday morning or late in most any evening. That%26#39;s just how it is. When in Rome ... eat the chicken fried steak!

hotel to commute to Ft Leavenworth

My family is moving to Ft Leavenworth (husband in Army) and we%26#39;re looking for a hotel to stay in until our household goods arrive. Can anyone recommend a place to stay that would be an easy commute and would also be good for young children (ages 7, 5, 2 and 4 months)? Is there anything with a small kitchenette? We%26#39;re hoping to spend no more than $110/night.

Mom, sorry for the late response ... you%26#39;re probably moved and settled in by now. I wasn%26#39;t going to be much help, anyway, but wanted to see if anyone could answer the underlying question you raised ... Is there some place to stay in or near Leavenworth?

We%26#39;ve been to the Fort area several times, for swim meets and such, and never had much luck finding good family hotels. We have either stayed down at Village West in KCK or chucked it and made the long drive home. It%26#39;s not too far over to the KCI airport area, but that%26#39;s not the best area to find kid-related activities. The Holiday Inn Express in Lansing doesn%26#39;t look bad at all, but we could never get a room there by the time we knew we were going to be up there. Plus, by the time you drive all the way through Leavenworth and Lansing to get to the HI Express, you%26#39;re most of the way to Village West, which has a lot more prospects for food and fun.

Anybody got a good spot in Leavenworth that we%26#39;re missing?

(no time limit on this one ... answer whenever you can ...)

    Kansas Beef

will be visiting the kansas city area next week. i%26#39;d like to know some of the best places to get a great steak, would prefer smaller locals places if anyone knows of them. thanks

    Kansas Beef

My personal favorite is CC%26#39;s City Broiler in Overland Park.:

They serve the best steak which I have found in the metro are, the service and atmosphere are good and the price is far below comparable area steak houses.

All entrees come with home baked sourdough bread, choice of soup or salad, and choice of starch of vegetable. Yet most dinners are priced from $20-25. Only a handful of meals are over $30.

They have only been open at this location for about 2 years in they have another restaurant in central Missouri.

For a more ';interesting'; ';local'; place, you might also consider going a half hour west of town to Bichelmeyer%26#39;s Steakhouse Restaurant in Tonganoxie, Kansas.

The family owned restaurant traces its history back to the B %26amp; B Sandwich Shop in Kansas City, Kansas and the Bichelmeyer Meat Market which opened in 1946 and is still operating in Kansasa City, Kansas. Good steak and an interesting 100 year old building.

CC%26#39;s is good but there are a lot of great places to get a good steak. J Alexanders is very good and so is J Gilberts. Both of these places will costs about 90$ with drinks for 2. My favorite cheap place for a great steak is Texas Roadhouse-you can get a great steak for under 20 dollars. most around 15. There is also Mortons.

J Gilberts is good and so is J Alexanders. Both are consistant with great service.

Some people really like to eat in a place that feels like that particular city. If you are one of those people, go ';old school';, and do the Majestic Steakhouse downtown....and I mean ';old school';.

LOTS to choose from when it comes to great steaks! My faves:

    Jess %26amp; Jim%26#39;s

    Plaza III

    Hereford House

    Golden Ox

Here%26#39;s a couple of links with info %26amp; addresses:

    …citysearch.com/bestof/winners/steak

    or try:

    cityguide.aol.com/kansascity/beststeakhouses

I%26#39;d try Hereford House. I also liek J. Alexanders, but think Hereford house is more of a steak house than a general restaraunt serving good steak.

You should also hit a good BBQ joint!

Reviving this post to say I%26#39;d head to Plaza II - The Steakhouse. I%26#39;ve not found any place that consistently has the very best prime steaks and top-notch service. Plaza III would also qualify for going ';old school';, if you go to the KCMO Plaza location, though not as ';old'; as Majestic. P-III is THE real Kansas City steak house, IMHO.

All the other places mentioned in this thread are good, but none are consistently good. Yahooz, down in Leawood, has served me one of the best KC Strip steaks I ever had, and one of the worst, while having great service one time and NO service the next. That happens at some of the other places, too, but it doesn%26#39;t happen at Plaza III, ever.

    KC Steak = Plaza III.

Oops! See that my first ';Plaza III'; came out as ';Plaza II'; ... I don%26#39;t think there is a #2, just 3. Sorry for the typo.

  • Jerky in LeRoy

Found a new place (new to me) this past weekend that I recomend: Luther%26#39;s Jerky in LeRoy, Kansas.

They produce beef %26amp; buffalo sausage; beef, turkey %26amp; buffalo jerky; and buffalo pemmican. I found the pemmican to be a real standout - lean ground buffalo, spices and raisins smoked for 5 hours. It is not tough like jerky, and has a lot of flavor. Somewhat sweet.

There is a combination restaruant and convienience store, with the smokehouse in a modern building next door. The owner Martin luther is fun and glad to answer questions. There was already a group coming in for a tour, and I was allowed to attach myself to that group. Martin conducted the entire tour, including demonstrating some of the machines while riding a Segway. It was a hoot!

    Jerky in LeRoy

Luther%26#39;s is still going strong ... and so is Martin (I was so disappointed that he is not The Great Reformer), but he is The Great Jerky Maker!) You can buy his jerky on his website at www.jerkyusa.com, but it%26#39;s not as much fun as going to the store. They also have smoked beef steak ... I%26#39;m not sure what they call it, but it%26#39;s more like a squared-off stick than a jerky strip ... and it is the best cured meat ever ... I didn%26#39;t see it on the website, but always try to get some in the store. Besides the steak, I like the regular jerky and the hot jerky. Friends like the Teryaki and Pemmican, but they are a little sweeter than suits my taste ... I like that good old beef and pepper. Stop in the store and get some of this Jerky, you won%26#39;t regret it. TIP of the Day = if you%26#39;re traveling US 75, LeRoy is just a few minutes East on K-58 (look for a bison herd in the pasture on the NW corner of the 75 - 58 Junction, and there%26#39;s a great greenhouse, Arnold%26#39;s, about half-way to town ... both places on right on the highway, you can%26#39;t miss them. It%26#39;s well worth the few minutes%26#39; drive, and if Martin has his way, you%26#39;ll taste his wares and become a Jerky-holic.

TR to Topeka, KS via US Airways, Hertz and Holiday Inn

We traveled to Topeka, KS for a funeral from July 27, 2007 to July 29, 2007. We flew from PDX to PHX, PHX to MCI all via US Airways (America West). Our flight from PDX was late about 10 minutes and the flight from PHX to MCI about 45 minutes. By the time we landed in Kansas City it was almost midnight (scheduled 11:03 pm arrival). Despite the distance from the plane to the baggage claim being less than 100 yards, it still took a good 20-30 minutes to get the bags unloaded. The airport itself is laid out well, it is very compact. I liked the airport.

KCI has a rent a car center similar to McCarran in Vegas (actually I think they opened before McCarran’s did). All the companies are in the same building and a universal bus takes one there. At that time of night there were only a few busses running and they stopped at all the terminals. Still, there were few passengers so it was only a 10 minute ride to the rent a center.

Hertz via Hotwire for my car. All was in order; I upgraded even and easily found the car. We were on the road a scant 10 minutes from arriving at the rent a center. Toyota Avalon, which was a nice car.

Drive to Topeka from Kansas City – approximately 1 hour, including $2.15 on the Kansas Turnpike

Hotel: Holiday Inn Topeka – West. Decent hotel, older, in need of remodeling. Priclined the room and received the standard PL room, even though I called and requested a quiet room immediately after winning my PL bid, letting them know we were in town for a funeral. Pros – good location, the lobby area has been converted to a “holidome” with a pool, games and a waterslide. The water slide was a welcome diversion for myself and the kids of the deceased who needed a break. The room comes with free continental breakfast or upgrades for discounted prices for hot breakfasts. Coffee pot in room. Free high speed internet (awesome!)

Cons – rooms are small, and there is very little room between the bed and the desk, so if someone were at the desk using it, no one would be able to walk behind to get to the bathroom. The shower was either scalding or a trickle. The drop ceiling in the bathroom had tiles with large chunks missing. Parking got fairly full, there always was a spot but it took some looking sometimes.

Ate at Perkins Family restaurant, Boulevard Pizza and Church’s chicken. Perkins was good, but the floor of the dining room was very dirty. Boulevard pizza was very good. Church’s wasn’t as good as I remembered, but the biscuits were excellent. The food at the breakfast buffet at the Holiday Inn was good and service great.

We also spent time at the Super 8 on Topeka road. This is an excellent newer motel and I would recommend it for travelers looking for someplace to spend the night. We still paid less on PL for the Holiday Inn, but I was impressed with the two room suite and the standard room at this Super 8.

Returning the car was a cinch, in and out of the rent-a-center in about 15 minutes. Tip – get gas in Topeka then top off at the gas station at the return center. It will save one about a dime per gallon.

Kansas City International Airport is now one of my favorite airports. So easy to navigate, no long lines, and Arthur Bryant’s in the airport. We ate at the Home Turf since I wanted AB’s I should have stopped at the restaurant on the way, but we did not want to miss our flight. The food was good but the menu limited.

Amazingly both US Airways flights home were on time. Everything on the way back went as smooth as can be.

I was never so happy to return to Portland ever. Usually we travel for business or for fun, so traveling for a funeral makes traveling much more tiring. Loved being back in the PNW, with lower humidity, less bugs and no smell of farms, cattle and fertilizer.

    Good luck and happy travels!

TR to Topeka, KS via US Airways, Hertz and Holiday Inn

Noticed your comment on the luggage. We just flew from Denver to KCI on United. When the plane stopped, we could see them unloading our luggage. We walked into the terminal, turned right, and walked a very short distance to the baggage claim area, from which we could see our plane right out the window. I thought to myself that this was good, and would mean that our luggage would be right out. Boy, was I ever wrong! We stood there for nearly an hour waiting for our bags to come up to the carousel. In the time we stood waiting, I think I could have carried all the bags in.

Don%26#39;t know what the deal is with KCI luggage handling.

Anybody got a clue on that?

TR to Topeka, KS via US Airways, Hertz and Holiday Inn

I%26#39;m a firm believer in Carry On.

I love flying in and out of MCI, but it is a dull place to get stuck for a few hours.

Was traveling with The Lovely Wife.

It would take one of those car-compacter things to fit her stuff in a carry-on!

  • Vegetarian restaurants in Kansas City

    Greetings,

I%26#39;ll be traveling to Kansas City this coming Wednesday and I was wondering if anyone knew of any vegetarian restaurants in the area. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

    Vegetarian restaurants in Kansas City

This is late ... I%26#39;ve been off in the mountains ... but I thought I might throw out an answer for later browsers ....

First, when you ask if there is something ';in the area'; of Kansas City, it is best to specify what areas you will be in ... if you know.

Since this is a ';Kansas'; forum, I%26#39;ll assume you mean are there veggie eateries in the area of Kansas City, Kansas ... not the big sister City in MO. The answer, I guess, is ... sort of.

If you are in the area of K.U. Medical Center, you can go just to the east (into MO) on 39th Street and find a good variety of eclectic dining spots ... some are old standbys, and some seem to come and go, but there are always some Asian and Middle Eastern places ... such as Blue Koi, Saigon 39, Aladdins, Great India, etc., and there is also a smattering of good veggie places just to the east of there in Westport and on Broadway up by the Uptown Theatre in the mid-30%26#39;s.

If you%26#39;re near the Med Center, then 39th Street is likely your place for veggie food ... and it%26#39;s also a good place to find non-veggie food. If you%26#39;re in some other part of the Metro KC area, say what part and maybe we can help !!!

    Vegetarian restaurants in Kansas City

    Greetings NotDave,

Thanks for replying to my message concerning the veggie restaurants in the Kansas City area.

I should have been more specific as to which of the Kansas Cities I was referring to (Kansas City, MO). But, everything went well. I found some nice Chinese Restaurants in the area that were sufficient.

    Again, thanks for the information.

    Peace and blessings,

    Ghost Tours

Rumor has it that Atchison, KS is the most haunted town in the country. However, the week I am traveling to Kansas there are no tours offered (they are only offered the first Saturday of the month May - August). Does anyone know of other tours that are offered or have a map of the haunted houses so that I can take my own self-guided ghost tour? I was really excited about these tours and of course I miss one by a day. Oh well.

    Ghost Tours

This site will give you enough information to find many of the homes: www.kansastravel.org/atchisontrolleytour.htm

You can pick up a map of historic homes from the Convention and Visitor%26#39;s bureau. It doesn%26#39;t list the haunted homes, but you can cordinate it with the info on that website.

There is a firm offering Ghost tours in Topeka, that you might also consider.

This was the first year that they offered summer Ghost tours at all. They do have other trolly tours. You might take one of them and pester the guide for info.

    Ghost Tours

Oh, one of the best known haunted places was not included in the tour whe I took it: Old Hoof %26amp; Horn at the Riverhouse Restaurant.

Stop for dinner and ask your server for details.

Thank you so much for the information! I emailed the visitor center for information and they told me some similar stuff. I will def. check out that restaurant that you suggested. Thanks again for taking the time to post! Have a great summer!!!

My family and I are planning to go there for the very same reason, but I thought that I saw where they were also doing the tours in October. You might want to call the chamber of commerce and ask for a diret number to the haunted tour, that is what I plan to do before i go out there. Also there is like some type of open forum for Atchison about the the town. You might want to read some of what they are saying before you venture out on your own as far as good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods. I have already read it and it made me think of other avenues before venturing with my family to unknown grounds. I just started my looking into hotels and ect. today. By the way, are there only TWO hotels in this town ? If anyone knows please write. Thanks, take care of you and yours.

Don%26#39;t wait to book tours in October.. Last year, October was sold out in early September.

I%26#39;ve been in Atchison several times and never felt I was some place unsafe. It hadn%26#39;t even occurred to me.

Forgot to answer your other question. I only know of a couple of motels and two or three B%26amp;Bs.

Leavenworth, KS and St. Joseph, MO are each about 20 miles away. St. Joseph probably offers the most options.

    Cottonwood Falls

There is a great article in todays Wichita paper about Friday nights in Cottonwood Falls and the music at the Emma Chase cafe. If anyone is in the area I strongly urge you to attend. There is also an article about three girls from New York city who took a 30 hour bus trip to see the Flint Hills after seeing an article about the area in the National Geographic. I did not take the time at see how to access the article but it definitely is worth reading.

  • Fall visit to Kansas

Our family will be living in Wichita for four weeks in September/early October. We have accommodation in the East part of the city, near the Lake and Country Club, I believe. We have a car, so I%26#39;d like to plan a few excursions each week for my young family. I%26#39;d also like to know about any great parks and shopping centres as I%26#39;d like to live like a local for four weeks - shop, cook, eat out occasionally, go to the park and muesum - that sort of thing. Also, I am wondering to if there will be any pumpkin patches etc, in preparation for Halloween, as we don%26#39;t celebrate that in Australia and my children are quite capivated by the idea. I believe, weather wise, it will be a great time of year. I look forward to your responses.

    Fall visit to Kansas

Wichita is well positioned to see much of Kansas, and I think you will find much to entertain your family in town. Excursions that may entertain your family would include:

Bonner Springs - Kansas City Renaissance Festival %26amp; Moon Marble Company

Dodge City - Boot Hill Museum. Along the way stop in Mullinville to see the odd art of M. T. Liggett

Hutchinson - Cosmosphere (world class space museum) and Salt Mine Museum. Visit the mixed Amish/Mennonite community of Yoder along the way.

Lucas - the Garden of Eden, Grassroots Art Center and other art is quirky and fun

Olathe - - Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop %26amp; Farm Historic Site has a Wild West Show %26amp; Bullwhacker Days in September.

Overland Park - Overland Park Arboretum %26amp; Deanna Rose Children%26#39;s Farmstead, both free.

Winfield - Walnut Valley Festival in September is a nationally known acoustic music festival.

Depending on your interests, there are many others. http://www.kansastravel.org/ has details on these and other attractions with candid comments to help you decide which ones are for you. Be sure to include a framers market in your stops.

    Fall visit to Kansas

G%26#39;day,---- I have a suggestion for a short day trip, There is a small town,Cottonwood Falls, a little over an hours drive northeast of Wichita that is certainly well worth a visit. It is located in an area called the Flint Hills and is part of the largest area of tall grass prairie left in the USA. In a good year, and if there are no cattle in the pasture, the grass can grow to a height of 2+ meters. There is also a restaurant , The Central Hotel, where you can get a good steak. It is also a b%26amp;b.

Try these two sites.www.parktrust.org/zb-glim.html. This is the ZBar/Springhill ranch and

    www.galleryatcwf.com.

I think you will find this a worth while trip. Where else can you find a store that sells furniture, carpets, guns and ammo and fish bait?

There is also a historic court house built in the French Renaissance style that is all locally quarried native limestone.

The area of Wichita where you will be has the best shopping areas in Wichita. Bradley Fair is one that comes to mind but I am not really into shopping. We also have a good zoo and several museums

There should be several pumpkin patches in the area. I was surprised to hear that you do not celebrate Halloween in Australia. I just assumed that with the number of Irish immigrants who have arrived there over the years that Halloween would be a big holiday.

    Pat

Thank you both for your suggestions. I have a lot of great ideas to keep us entertained. The Cosmosphere and Salt Mine received a very positive response from the kids, as well as seeing grass that is taller than them! My husband loves the idea of a good steak house.

How long is the drive from Wichita to Kansas City? I am wondering whether we can drive there and back in a day.

I am really looking forward to getting a taste of living life (all be it for only a month) in Wichita.

From the east side of Wichita to the southwest side of metro KC (Olathe) takes me about 2.5 hours. Downtown is another 20-25 minutes.

Don%26#39;t take the Turnpike all the way unless you are going to Bonner Springs. If your teens have never been to a Rennisance Festival, I think they will be impressed. It is the size of a small theme park and can take 3 hours to an entire day.

Our zoo is quite good with wonderful exhibits from lions to penquins. Cowtown Museum is quite fun especially if there is a special weekend event scheduled. This is a living history museum, they have a website. There are several pumpkin patches around and don%26#39;t forget about a haunted house (or field or whatever they cook up this year). Also at this time of year there are usually maizes around (they are cut out of corn fields, going at night and trying to find your way using a flash light can be even better). These are quite popular activities and can involve long lines but goofing around waiting can be part of the fun. We also have a dirt track car race (81 Speedway) nearby that doesn%26#39;t end its season until sometime during this period of time. There is also a drag car raceway (Wichita International Raceway) open through September.

How old are your children and will they be attending school here during this time?

There is an art museum on the East side of town as well as downtown. In the downtown area there is another art museum, Indian Museum, Exploration Place (childrens museum, but enjoyable for adults, too)and Botanica (a wonderful garden, I don%26#39;t know that I have ever been there during this time of year, but I%26#39;m sure it is beautiful with the leaves started to change.) There is also a wonderful park near all of these attractions.

Wichita also has a renaissance festival at the end of September in a wonderful park on the West side of town. I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s not the scale of the Kansas City festival, but you mentioned living as the locals.

If you want to get an idea of Wichita%26#39;s history visit the Historical Museum downtown or the Kansas Aviation Museum. The Historical Museum is wonderful, I haven%26#39;t been to the Aviation Museum but have heard good things. The Museum of World Treasures is downtown in Old Town and is very good as well!

Another possibility, depending on when you are here and when they will close for the season, is the Starlite Drive-In Movie Theater. Definately something every family should experience! We also have a nice ice skating rink just to the West of the downtown area.

Restaurants (fast food to nice) to experience in town: NuWay (get a root beer float), Cafe Bel Ami (downtown, nice dining, reservations taken), Old Mill Tasty Shop (downtown, old fashioned soda fountain), Hog Wild Barbecue (haven%26#39;t had Kansas City BBQ but we love this), Thai Tradition (delicious!) - I%26#39;ll quit with this.

Hope your time here is enjoyable - let us know any other questions you have!

Oh yeah, how could i forge the steak - in the middle of cattle country and the grand daughter of a farmer that also raised cows!

Scotch %26amp; Sirloin always has good food and is locally owned. We also have a really good chain restaurant, Texas Roadhouse that also has good food and a fun, louder atmosphere.

Looking for vacation 2008 ideas from fellow Kansans

We would like to go on vacation during spring break this year and at a loss for what to do. (Actually the two ideas I had are just out of our price range - California or Cruise) Our oldest will be graduating so it may be the last time we all take a big trip together! Flying is really not an option with the size of our family (and budget). We are about equally split between liking outdoor activities and just lounging. Trips over the years (to help with our interests) have included camping in the Black Hills of South Dakota, all things tourist in San Antonio, white water rafting in Colorado, all things tourist on the East coast from North Carolina to Massachusets, visiting family/tourist type things in Alabama and Minnesota. We try and do different things/places to reach all areas of the country. It has been a few years since we have been on a big trip together (too many teenagers with too many activites).

What are some things you have done within driving distance? Any ideas? Our kids are 12-18.

Looking for vacation 2008 ideas from fellow Kansans

The Schlitterbahn waterparks are great for kids through teenage, but might be tricky at Spring Break time at South Padre or Galveston ... assume you might have done the one at New Braunfels, N.E. of San Antonio.

The Alabama Gulf Coast ... Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Fort Morgan, is a beautiful place with a growing variety of activities and ';inactivities';, and is drivable if you%26#39;re a little bit sporting. We think the beaches there are one of those %26#39;Best Kept Secret%26#39; kind of places ... stunning white sugar sand, clear emerald water, great fishing, golf, water sports of all types, and beaches with just enough of a crowd but not too much.

Any snow skiers in the bunch? There is still good skiing in Colo and New Mexico that time of year, and either are very drivable.

Just a few middle of the night thoughts .... Good luck getting something picked out ... Sent our first one off to college this year, and are very glad we took the whole gang to Table Rock Lake last summer and got a condo on the Lake ... lots of action time and also lots of down time. Very good trip with the kids.

Looking for vacation 2008 ideas from fellow Kansans

Go to central Nebraska to view the sandhill cranes at Rowne Sanctuary and Crane Meadows.

Over 500,000 cranes stop along a 60 mile stretch of the Platte River each spring and spend 2-4 weeks flattening up before their final 7,000 mile flight to the arctic and sub-arctic. These are big birds: 3-4 feet tall with a 6 foot wingspan.

You can books spots in the blinds at both reserves. I recommend booking at Rowe. When I did it, we also saw lots of other waterfowl, eagles and deer.

The sound of the cranes is particularly impressive.

    Rodeos in Kansas

Anybody ever been to the great rodeos in Kansas? I%26#39;m a rodeo buff - and they have some really good ones in Kansas. Several of them are the first weekend of August - Abilene, Phillipsburg, Dodge City. Reasonably priced - great competition - good clowns and acts - and during the summer, the evenings in Kansas cool off comfortably and it%26#39;s a pleasure to sit outside under the stars and watch a rodeo!

    Rodeos in Kansas

    hello, sandhillsgal!

I just had to say HI cause my family lived

around the ';sandhills'; area when I was growing up. My extended family that is. My Dad and Mom moved a LOT. But I have tons of relatives in Hutchinson and West of there almost to Pratt. And I remember picking ';sandhill plums'; in the ditches along the roads. I even went to Sterling College and had ';dates'; take me out driving only to get bogged down in the sand on the back roads out there!!

Now my daughter is married to a Flint Hills Rancher West of Salina - near ';Post Rock'; Country. And we often use Abilene as a meeting place if I come get grandkids for a weekend or something. I just love ALL of Kansas (spent from age 26 to 46 in Tucson, AZ) and am so happy to be living here again. I am 53 and we have lived in Lawrence for going on 7 years, now. But we want to move West Central in a couple years.

Rodeos YEAH!! My son-in-law is an honest to gosh cowboy, building a cattle herd and ';petting'; his bulls. I am looking forward to attending rodeos again, this time with my grandchildren!! (2nd marriage for my daughter - just remarried under 2 years - they have 15, 13, 7 year old sons between

them and their own new baby girl. I love visiting out there - tiny little farm house and my Tucson raised grandsons ridin horses like they were born on them!!

My favorite Rodeo memories come from the Strong City Rodeo (south of Council Grove, just West of Emporia). We lived in Strong

City when I was little and then my first husband and I owned a house in Cottonwood Falls (1 mile S of Strong City) when my kids were little. A very fun area.

    Regards,

    gma rebah

    Rodeos in Kansas

The rodeo in Strong City Kansas is always the first week-end in June. It is on highway U.S. 50, approx.20 miles west on Emporia. It normally is a very good rodeo and well worth the trip.

Any rodeos coming up soon near Wichita? I%26#39;ve never seen one (unless Club Rodeo counts, and that was pretty impressive!) and would love to experience one during my time in Kansas. Will be here until approx March 2008.

I%26#39;m pretty sure there%26#39;s a rodeo in Wichita in January or February. You might check on www.prorodeo.com or a Wichita event website.

3 hours drive away, and a couple of hundred feet from Kansas, the American Royal in Kansas City has Rodeos and extended horse shows over several weeks in the Fall.

Thank you - we%26#39;ll be sure to check one (or more!) out!

I like the Flint Hills Rodeo at Strong City. Best in Kansas. It is in early June, so it%26#39;s usually not too hot yet, and the grasslands are beautiful that time of year. 2008 version is, I think, June 6, 7 %26amp; 8.

Probably should check out lodging well in advance. If there%26#39;s nothing local, try Emporia to the east, and Hillsboro or McPherson to the west.

They are looking for rodeos between now and March.

We visited Cottonwood Falls yesterday and saw the Flint Hills Rodeo %26#39;stadium%26#39; - very disappointed that we probably won%26#39;t be here in June next year. Had a great day in the Flint Hills though. Thanks for posting anyway.

Was responding to Sandhillsgirl ... piping in to say I think the Flint Hills Rodeo is tops. Sorry VonTrapp isn%26#39;t going to be here there. Light-house-en Up!

  • Labor Day Weekend - what's going down in Kansas?

British, and currently based in Wichita, my husband and I are interested in events and places to visit for the Labor Day weekend. Preferably within two hours drive. Thank you :)http://www.tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i14061-Relax_in_the_Flint_Hills.html

Labor Day Weekend - what's going down in Kansas?

For something completely different, how the AirFest amateur rocketry event near Argonia, just a little southwest of Wichita?

These folks have hosted the annual Tripoli Rocketry Association national launch several times and hosted the inaugural Discovery Channel ';Rocket Challenge.'; AirFest is one of their biggest events of the year.

Rockets will launch steadily during the day, all weekend, perhaps 20-30 an hour. Some are small, but other rise well out of sight. Some of the most interesting ones are those that don%26#39;t go right. The BIG experimental rockets go up on Labor Day.

    Free.

Topeka is abou 2 hours. There is an Inter-Tribal Pow Wow: shawneecountyalliedtribes.org/2007Flyer.pdf

    Nice place for dinner???

I am not from the area and I was curious to see if there is any place I can go in the topeka area where I can sit down and have a nice dinner with some friends that is a casual dress or higher. I%26#39;m not looking for a fast food joint where the food will be under par and there will be kids running and screaming everywhere.

    Sincerely yours,

    Fine Diner

    Nice place for dinner???

Wanamaker road is full of ';trendy'; restaurants (Chili%26#39;s, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, etc and newly built Old Chicago and On The Border) but if you are looking to stay away from the franchise types there are a few restaurants on Gage Blvd (around SW 10th to 15th Streets) that are nice - Paisano%26#39;s (great Italian Food) New City Cafe (Upscale) Annie%26#39;s (Comfortable atmosphere) and more.

    Nice place for dinner???

Texas Roadhouse is on Huntoon just off Wannamaker and the service and food quality is better than anything in Topeka.

Pisanos italian restaurant at 10th Street and SW Gage. Great food and adult atmosphere.

Let%26#39;s face it people...Topeka restaurants are the worst. But Paisano%26#39;s won%26#39;t make you ill. Chez Yasu is elegant and they do try to make the food interesting. New City Cafe is okay but you won%26#39;t want to go more than a couple of times. I%26#39;ve been to Annie%26#39;s Place and I wouldn%26#39;t go back. If you want a chain Johnny Carinos is probably the best one they have.

The Blind Tiger at 37th and Kansas is absolutely wonderful. The are a microbrewery, and the food is good every time. A nice change from the chain restaurants.

I also recommend Chez Yasu (French, Japanese chef), Paisano%26#39;s, and New City Cafe. Aboud%26#39;s is nice too, but I%26#39;m not sure whether they do dinner. Their brunch is great though. Also the Falling Water Grill at the Capital City Plaza has good food, but it%26#39;s not cheap, and depending on who is in town then it could be either nice and quiet, or there could be kids running and screaming everywhere.

As for the Blind Tiger, it used to be good, but it seems they%26#39;ve reduced the size of their menu to more of a sports bar type of place recently. Or maybe that%26#39;s just what they serve in between lunch and dinner.

I enjoy Jul%26#39;s for a nice evening out - also for lunch. Other nice places include The Brick Oven, New City Cafe and for a nice bar, I like O%26#39;Dooley%26#39;s. Don%26#39;t let the outside fool you. While it%26#39;s not smoke-free, the inside has a lot of atmosphere, reasonable food and service. Another surprise - the cafe in the library has great food for a low-key lunch. I%26#39;ve never been dissappointed.

Tuptim Thai is very good. It%26#39;s probably my favorite restaurant in Topeka. Food is fresh, delicious and elegantly served. A nice place for dinner and conversation with friends. The food is really excellent. The Globe, downtown, while short on atmosphere, has wonderful Indian food.

The Brick Oven is relatively new and has a decent--heavy on meat, with a couple of fish offerings--menu. I like the atmosphere better than the food but it%26#39;s a personal choice. Longhorn, while a chain, does a better steak than some of the old-time local steakhouses.

Kiku--a typical Japanese teppanyaki place, also has good sushi.

    %26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt; The Brick Oven is relatively new and has a decent--heavy on meat, with a couple of fish offerings--menu. I like the atmosphere better than the food but it%26#39;s a personal choice. %26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

Brick Oven is south on Wannamaker, just past 29th St., and is worth the drive. The atmosphere is a little upscale for my smoked meat days, but I guess being pampered a little is okay, though it comes with a bit of a price. The meat here is top-rate, and cooked wonderfully ... even on the simple Cuban sandwich, the smoky flavor of the pork is incredible. This one is worth a few tries.

I am often in Topeka and in the past few years things have been getting better, food-wise. Here are two that do not disappoint.

Great Chinese food in Topeka? You bet! Finally!!!

Sun%26#39;s (Chinese) as good as any Chinese food we%26#39;ve had anywhere and I%26#39;m from the SF area

    2121 SW Belle Ave

    Topeka

    Fritz Company Grille (fish)

    1717 S.W. Wanamaker Rd.

    Topeka Ks. 66604

    785-273-7766

There%26#39;s also a very good Mexican restaurant on SW 29th Street near the Dillon%26#39;s Store and Boss Hawg%26#39;s. In the 2800 block near Oakley.

  • Background info on Beverly Jean Acklin; born about 1941

Recently I received word that Beverly had died, but the person did

not know when, where, or why. I had last spoken to her when she

lived in or near Boulder, Colorado, in October 1983. She came

to Ottawa, KS, in 1959 (following high school graduation in a city

west of Portland, Oregon) and lived with her Grandmother in her

home in Ottawa. She attended OU for two years, 1959-1960 and1960-1961. I am Llewellyn (Llew) Scott Walker. I was in my Jr.

year at OU, when Rev. Richard Copeland (the Rev. came later)

introduced me to her in the fall of 1959. We were engaged in

June 1960 and married in the First Baptist Church of Ottawa on

Friday, June 2, 1961. I graduated June 4, 1961. In the fall, we

moved to Berkeley, California, where I attended Berkeley Baptist

Divinity School, an American Baptist Seminary near the campus

of the University of California, Berkeley. She worked as a

secretary at UC-Berkeley. We separated in early 1962. Later

that spring, I returned to my hometown of Rockford, Illinois.

The next year, in February-March of 1962. she asked if I could

get a divorce in Rockford, since California law required a one

year waiting period. That divorce was granted in March 1962.

She married a fellow who was then stationed in the US Coast Guard Station at Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. They

had two sons. When she called me when I was the Pastor in Delavan, Wisconsin, in October 1983, she said she had been divorced, and later married an older man. They had moved to Boulder, Colorado. That%26#39;s the last I had heard from her as well

as about her. Rich Copeland suggested that I write to Garnett

to see if someone there might have news regarding her life after October 1983.

Having retired in March 1995, after 18 years as Pastor of the

First Baptist Church of Delavan, Wisconsin, my wife, Pat, and I

moved to Milwaukee in May 1995, to an apartment eight blocks

north of our older son, Scott, who lives in Wauwatosa, WI, with

his wife, Tonette, and their two sons, Matt and Alex. Last

month, our younger son, David, and his wife, Maria, moved

from Phoenix to Wauwatosa. They have two daughters, Isabella

Mia (3 years, 9 months) and Eva Paytin (four and 1/2 months).

If anyone in the Garnett area has information regarding Beverly,

I would appreciate knowing how her life progressed. She told

me in October 1983, that she had opened her life to the Lord

and found a new beginning in her life and faith as a result. She

    was a very fine person.

    Information can be sent to: Rev. Llewellyn (Llew) S. Walker;

    7210 West Burleigh Street, Apt. 1; Milwaukee, WI 53210-1171;

    Phone: (414) 871-4218 E-mail: LlewPat@sbcglobal.net

Thank you for any assistance you may be able to share with me,

and God%26#39;s blessings to you all!

Background info on Beverly Jean Acklin; born about 1941

I%26#39;m not from Garnett, but know the area a bit. An archived obituary from October 2, 2003, in the Ottawa (KS) Herald shows the death of a Lela Morris of Hillsboro, Oregon, and notes that she was preceded in death by her daughter, Beverly Jean Acklin-Gustaffon [sic* - I would presume they meant to spell it %26#39;Gustafson%26#39;, as is common in the area]. I don%26#39;t readily see any other info, except that Dengel %26amp; Son Mortuary in Ottawa, KS handled the funeral arrangements for Mrs. Morris.

It is pretty easy to pass blame on managers. Is it the manager that keeps rooms out dated, or not have high speed internet? Or not have hairdryers, irons/boards, microfriges in rooms? I doubt it. What about the flimsey mattress. Was the manager able to order replacements on their own or wait for the owners? Also, somepeople are used to a certain mattress...anything less won%26#39;t ';cut it';.

While I can understand the breakfast issue, did that person ask the clerk if any more was available?

It looks like a pretty decent place. I have stayed in 100%26#39;s of hotels and even the top of the line $ places do get blankets with burn holes that either wasn%26#39;t noticed right away, or they may not have had any to replace at the moment.

    Winfield, Kansas

Wow, the frist person to ever post in the Winfield forum:-)

I am going to the Walnut Valley Festival this weekend. Any recomendations for unique Winfield restaurants?

    Winfield, Kansas

I%26#39;ve not been there for several years. But there used to be a good BBQ restaurant North of town by the golf course. It was just a little south of the Comfort Inn as I recall.

Good Luck and enjoy the Festival....

    Winfield, Kansas

Thanks KC, I had pretty good bbq just stopping by some of the camps at the Festival. The festival was much more fun than the State Fiar, which I visited on Sunday.

The restuarant I settled on was Burger Station, a tiny carry out (only) restaurant that has operated out of this location since 1952. The menu consists of only hamburgers, fries, and chile.

The cheeseburger was pretty good, the fries just above average.

  • Cross Country Trip–Feedback on Route? (Updated/Reposted)

Based on feedback that I have received from fellow TA travelers, I have adjusted this schedule and wanted to re-post for additional feedback. I apologize for the long post (and posting it in multiple places). Not sure where to post something like this. In early April of 2008, I will start a three-week journey driving from Raleigh, NC ending in Sacramento, CA. I have bought a book called “120 Scenic Drives in America” and I am using this to help guide my route. The real purpose of the trip is to see the country, significant points of interest along the way, and just get away.

Below is what I have laid out– and is subject to additional change based on my fellow TA’s advice. I have attempted to split it up to drive around 200 miles/day. The places that seem a bit strange to stop are those places along my routes that have a TA highly rated place to stay that are in my price range (~$100/night). I frequent Hampton Inns and that class of hotel. I will need internet connectivity along the way as I will be working some. If you know of a “must see” close to my route, please let me know.

Any input or advice on my journey would be very much appreciated. I am very open to your suggestions – I have received awesome advice from you guys thus far.

Day 1: Raleigh, NC to Lewisburg, WV. One of the “scenic drives”, the Midland Trail, starts in White Sulphur Springs, WV to and goes to Charleston, WV. 244 miles.

Day 2: Lewisburg, WV to Morehead, KY. Finishes the Midland Trail. 225 miles.

Day 3: Morehead, KY to Cave City, KY. Route includes the “Bluegrass to Pennroyal” drive. 239 miles.

Day 4: Cave City, KY to Metropolis, IL. Finish the “Bluegrass to Pennroyal” drive and get a little gambling in Metropolis. 184 miles.

Day 5: Metropolis, IL to Mt. Vernon, IL via the “Shawnee Hills Scenic Byway” along the IL/KY border. 155 miles.

Day 6: Mt. Vernon, IL to Jefferson City, MO. Will start the “Missouri Rhineland” drive. 221 miles.

Day 7: Jefferson City, MO to Topeka, KS. 221 miles.

Day 8: Topeka, KS to Oklahoma City, OK. 285 miles.

Day 9: Oklahoma City, OK to Amarillo, TX. 275 miles.

Day 10: Amarillo, TX Raton, NM. 215 miles. (Via Clayon, NM to start one of the scenic drives along northern NM.)

Day 11: Raton, NM to Santa Fe, NM. 167 miles. (May stay in Albuquerque instead).

Day 12: Santa Fe, NM to Winslow, AZ. 325 miles.

Day 13 and 14: Winslow, AZ to Sedona, AZ. For two nights. (via Camp Verde). 149miles.

Day 15: Sedona, AZ to Williams, AZ early to catch the steam train to see the GC. 61 miles.

Day 16: Williams, AZ to Las Vegas, NV. Via “Route 66”. 217 miles.

Day 17: Las Vegas, NV to Stovepipe Wells, CA. 152 miles.

Day 18 Stovepipe Wells, CA to Mammoth Lake or Lee Vining, CA. 180 miles.

Day 19 and 20: Mammoth Lake or Lee Vining, CA to S. Lake Tahoe. For two nights. 138 miles.

Day 21: S. Lake Tahoe to Sacramento, CA. 110 miles.

Day 22: Fly back to NC.

Topeka to OKC....around 5 hour drive. Do you have hotels booked? If not, be sure and check the hotels on Wanamaker Road here in Topeka which is the main hub for I-70 and I-470 then you%26#39;ll head south on I-35 to OKC. There is also an AAA office on Wanamaker so access to travel assistance if you need it while you are here.

Please feel free to send a Personal Message to me with any questions about our area since I am usually on another forum and don%26#39;t check back here often since there aren%26#39;t many posts (as you can tell). Ducky

Cross Country Trip%26ndash;Feedback on Route? (Updated/Reposted)

Day 8 ~ consider one of the scenic side roads in KS like: from Topeka, east on I40 to 177 then south through Council Grove %26amp; Cottonwood Falls (past the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve).

Day 11 ~ consider going to Santa Fe by way of 64, around Mt. Wheeler, to Taos and then taking ';The High Road to Taos'; back to Santa Fe.. very scenic.. and from Santa Fe taking 14, the ';Turquoise Trail'; through Madrid to ABQ

Of course, I love the back roads.

spbill%26#39;s ideas for day eight are good but a couple of minor corrections. Go west from Topeka on I-70 which is also US 40. You will intersect with Kansas highway 177 just west of Manhattan,KS.and you can get back on I-35 (Kansas turnpike) at Cassoday KS.and continue on to OK.City. Cottonwood Falls is worth a short stop to see the old courthouse and it also has some interesting stores. This area known as the'; Flint Hills'; is the largest area of tall grass prairie still left in the United States.

Ooops ! Thought not my first traveling mistake... I guess that%26#39;s why I like the less traveled roads.. direction doesn%26#39;t count much :)

Is there a particular reason for going to Topeka?

Consider staying in Lawrence. The next day, drive down to Baldwin City and cross to Council Grove on US-56.

This stretch is pretty interestering. Baldwin CIty, Burlingame and Council Grove are all worth investigating.,

You avoid a big stretch of dull, toll road:-)

I agree with the suggestion of staying in Lawrence vs Topeka. Lawrence is a neat college town and interesting to just go up and down their main drag of Mass.

Well Topeka is the Capitol of the State of Kansas...not that I disagree with Lawrence having nice restaurant choices since KU is there.

  • Looking for reviews of The Row House and The Woodward

    Hi all!

Taking my husband to The Woodward B%26amp;B for our anniversary...looking for reviews, I%26#39;ve only seen one on this site so far. I hope I%26#39;m not disappointed! I do hear it%26#39;s not in the BEST part of town, but the historic mansions never are...

Also looking for reviews of The Row House Restaurant. Anyone been? Any other recommendations for a nice anniversary dinner?

    Thanks!!!!!

Looking for reviews of The Row House and The Woodward

Hi missy...I%26#39;ve been in the Woodward but only for a reception (and it isn%26#39;t in a very good part of Topeka so just don%26#39;t go roaming around at night by yourself)

The Row House is EXCELLENT!!! We%26#39;ve been there twice and enjoyed the experience both times...try the tasting menu since it is a few dollars more, and you can sample all the chef%26#39;s courses that day. There is a web site with the menu (think it changes every Thursday).

Happy anniversary and hope you enjoy your stay!

Looking for reviews of The Row House and The Woodward

I%26#39;ve stayed at the Woodward and very much enjoyed the surroundings and service. No, it is NOT in the best part of town, but it%26#39;s also not THAT bad. I simply wouldn%26#39;t suggest doing a night time walk through the area. As you are taking your husband for an anniversary celebration, perhaps you could devise a plan to spend some time together exercising and relaxing in other ways indoors.

The particular event I attended included fabulous meals which were very well presented, well prepared and tasty, but the quantity of food was a disappointment. My husband finished dinner and spent some time socializing, then promptly drove to Burger King to get some meat for he and his friends. Some men just are not into Nouveau Cuisine! Go figure!

Elizabeth and her staff were pleasant and courteous, attentive to needs yet were unobtrusive when they were not needed. The rooms were exquisitely decorated and the entire place clean clean clean!

I would definitely go again if I had an occasion.

Oh, and the library is a must see, as well as the cobalt glass collection.

Hope you enjoy your time there, and Happy Anniversary!

    Where2

Visiting Topeka from Denver this past weekend, we spotted mention of Row House in a Topeka guidebook and decided to give it a try. Wow. Set inside a lovely old home, the service was outstanding, the setting fun and funky, and the food was great. If they took their $30 tasting menu and unraveled it so that each of the samples was served as a separate small course on a series of small plates, this would easily be a $60 dinner and people would be raving about the wonderful 7- or 8-course meal being served. At $30 for the tasting dinner, this is a fine-dining steal. HIGHLY recommended.

Also worth noting - one person in our 3-person party was a vegetarian,. Row House strives to be very vegetarian friendly, with a vegetarian main course always available and a salad or appetizer that is also a vegetarian choice. Our vegetarian diner was very pleased.

    Holly Restaurant?

Is there a place in OP that ';sounds like'; or is called the Holly restaurant??

    Holly Restaurant?

There was a restaurant and bar in Lenexa near Oark Park Mall, just a few hundred feet from Overland Park: Hawley%26#39;s (I might not have the spelling exact). It has been closed for _many_ years.

We used to go there often for happy hour when they had good prices on oysters and other seafood.

    Holly Restaurant?

I agree, the only place I know of was Hawleys and I sure wish it was still here....

The City of OP has a website that shows the health reports for all restaurants in our city and nothing showed up similar to your request. Here is the link if you%26#39;d like to see it....

    opkansas.org/_Res/…Search.cfm

Speaking of health, I should mention the last time I went to Hawley%26#39;s

I was drinking iced tea, and the waitress came over with a pitcher. She picked up my glass, poured my drink into the pitcher, than refilled my glass.

As I said, that was the last time I went there.

    Iola Restaurants

Any suggestions for interesting non-chain restaurants in Iola?

    Iola Restaurants

Mexicam food on the square. Greenery by best western north side of town.

    Iola Restaurants

    Thanks.

Just looking at the list of places in town, Greenery had looked the most likely. Glad to hear that it is right next to the Best Western where I will be staying.

I%26#39;ve not been there for several years...but there is also a great chinese restaurant or was...it had a great buffet ...on the main drag and I think was on the north west corner of the intersection where it was....i believe south of the best western.....also ate at the restaurant there and it is pretty good...

    just remember, small town....nothing fancy...

I tried 4 Iola restuarants this past weekend. I found Greenery average, but I would repeat any of the other three...

El Charro of Iola, the Mexican restaurant you mentioned on the square. I%26#39;m not a big fan of Mexican restaurants, but the food was quite good. The only disappointment is that they can%26#39;t serve Margarita%26#39;s, only beer.

King%26#39;s Sandwich Shop, a family owned diner that has been operating since 1955. If you eat a triple hamburger, they put your photo on their wall of fame. Doesn%26#39;t sound like a major feat, but I had fried crayfish and a chili dog instead.

Madison Avenue Steaks and Chops, open only on Friday %26amp; Saturday evenings, this steakhouse is in a wonderful old garment manufacturing building. The service so-so, but my aged steak was quite good.

    Scenic Drives

I%26#39;m taking one of my normal and usual lunatic road trips... specifically to be in Kansas City by late afternoon October 5 (and Chicago the next night... soccer fan).

I%26#39;ve rambled through I-70 (and I-80) more than once, and wish to break up the monotony a little. My somewhat trusty Rand McNally notes scenic drives via US 36 and either US 24 or one of the state routes (don%26#39;t have the atlas with me at the moment). Please offer suggestions. Please note that I will be limiting the number of stops made, as I%26#39;m probably going to be no further than, oh, Goodland on the night of the 4th. When on the road, I%26#39;m more into the scenic than I am museums and the like, unless something exceptional is available.

I should note one thing: it%26#39;s possible I could ';sort of'; reverse the return route (currently thinking of going through South Dakota returning west, but if I end up with a need to, say, pass back through St. Louis, I might), so I could possibly take an out-of-the-way suggestion.

    Scenic Drives

Yea for lunatic road trips....I live in the Metro KC area and a few years back we wanted to take a senic route and avoid I-70 towards the East side of Missouri. We took US 36 to Hannibal and really enjoyed the change of pace.

    Enjoy your trip..

    Scenic Drives

    Howdy Pounder,

I would suggest US 36. I take this quite often.

You will not make great time, but it is not just beating down the pavemnet.

    Happy trails,

US36, won%26#39;t be that slow. It is mostly 65mph, straight and fairly low traffic.

Interesting stops along the way include the Davis Memorial in Hiawatha http://www.kansastravel.org/davismemorial.htm and Paul Boyer Museum Of Animated Carvings in Belleville http://www.kansastravel.org/boyergallery.htm

    Boyer%26#39;s creations are very cool!

I travel commercially throughout Kansas and just returned from a soujourn on US 36. It is a fairly highly traveled route from MO/KAN border to approximately Norton. I would recommend taking a diagonal at Norton and cutting Southwest from there to I-70. and from past experiences is probably better maintained than US 24 and the communities along the route offer a few more services and attractions. US 36, from my perspective, is generally much more scenic than I-70. Happy Trails!
