this place looks fantastic, has any one been that can share their experience? we want to go next visit, if time allows. i may have to make time to allow!

Well I didn%26#39;t reply right away since I haven%26#39;t been there (you do mean the one near Salina?)

My Mom and sister have been so will try and remember to ask them...if I remember, they said it was worth the drive.

The Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge is located along the Neosho River upstream (north and west) from John Redmond Reservoir. It is popular with birdwatchers and, perhaps ironically, hunters. Areas north and east of the Neosho River are closed to all access November 1 thru March 1 -- that%26#39;s the %26#39;refuge%26#39; part, but are open to the public (for the most part) the rest of the year. Areas south and west of the Neosho are open all year (unless posted otherwise). There are 2 trails I know of ... one is at the Refuge office at Hartford, and the other, my favorite, is Dove%26#39;s Roost, which you can reach from I-35 by exiting at Lebo, going South through town and continuing on a good paved road south for 7 miles, follow the curve East onto 19th Road and look for a sign in one mile ... turn south on Garner Road, a decent gravel road, go south about 1/2 mile turn right at the sign and you%26#39;ll see the parking lot and a small observation tower at the trailhead. It%26#39;s a fairly short and manageable trail, with woodlands, prairie, and seasonal views of the adjoining wetlands and, in spring and fall, about a bezillion migratory birds. If you%26#39;re in the area and interested, get back on the blacktop and follow it east, then south, then east ... cross US Hwy 75 north of New Strawn and visit the Environmental Education Area adjacent to the large cooling lake for the Wolf Creek power plant. They have good habitats, exhibits, nesting raptors, etc. Well worth the trip and just 10 miles south of I-35 and 1 mile east of US 75. There%26#39;s a good little cafe hidden at the golf course on the north end of New Strawn, or you can go back to BETO Junction at I-35 %26amp; US75 and eat the good buffet with the truckers.
