this has to tbe the best small town in all of america
paxico ks
Well that is a very nice compliment...we lived there for 14 years!
paxico ks
i loved my visit there more than all the other small little towns we went through. warm friendly folks, good food, plenty of it,and very cold beer. more than anything i think i enjoyed the remoteness and the fact that when the sun went down you could see it 360 degrees around out in the flat fields. lovely place, heaven on earth i thought. and still think so.
Any unique restaurants? :-)
No restaurants....when we lived there, Nickerson Farms was ';THE'; place to eat probably in a 4 or 5 county area. We both worked there at the time, and it wasn%26#39;t unusual to see a line waiting to get into the restaurant for the home-style all you could eat chicken dinners.
There was a great little tavern/grill that was locally owned but was sold several times after we moved back to Topeka so not sure who now owns it.
We also used to have a grocery/hardware store, but it also closed after we moved. About that same time, a local guy opened a store that specialized in antique wood burning stoves...now Paxico is the place to go antique shopping since there are other stores that operate on a full-time basis.
I do know west of Paxico and on the north side of
I-70 (around McFarland exit), there is a restaurant in a big red building called Grandma Hoerner%26#39;s that is supposed to have good food. I think they also sell honey and jellies...we%26#39;ve not been there so only know what others have told me.
There is also a place in Maple Hill (in part of the original bank building) called Puffy%26#39;s Steakhouse. It is either REALLY good or not so good...just have to take your chances since there have really not been good consistant cuts on their steaks so tenderness does vary.
Grandma Hoerner%26#39;s is where the jellies and other food items are made. It also has a small retail store, but no restaurant when I was there.
I tried Puffy%26#39;s twice, but had the ';no so good.'; The building is interesting, and the concept of entering and leaving thruogh the little market.
Oh thanks for the Grandma Hoerner%26#39;s update Lighthouselover, because they used to have sandwiches (hamburgers)...so must have decided to discontinue that part of the business.
Paxico has (or at least had, 8 years ago) some great little antique shops. I remember the Nickerson Farms well.
