tallgrass national prairie

When is the best month to visit the park in the spring? Plan to go sometime soon, but want to be sure I don%26#39;t go too early.

Thanks,

Go the weekend of April 11. That way you can also attend the Prairie Fire Festival.

For something unique in Kansas, on the drive down stop at the The European BakeShop in Hartford (off I-70 a few miles before you get to Emporia). www.kansastravel.org/europeanbakery.htm

Thanks - if I go during the festival though will the hiking be crowded? I know they limit the number each day, but I don%26#39;t want to see a lot of people while out on the trails.

I will check out the link you sent.

Thanks for replying!

One small correction about Hartford. It is south of I-35 about 10 miles east of Emporia---not I-70

Thanks Patrick.

The bakery in Hartford is truly amazing ... and has to rank as one of the most unexpected pleasures in Kansas.

When to visit the Flint Hills? It depends on what you want to do, but my favorite time is in May to early June. The prairie will have greened-up after burning, there will be loads of wildflowers and birds, and the chiggers will not be out and about quite yet (though ticks already are). You should come back after it gets hot and dry, though, because the fireflies are incredible out there.
